The Elements: Earth, Water, Fire and Air
Water (H2O) is essential to life, about 60% of an adult’s body is water and, on average, you will not survive more than 3 – 4 days without any. Water is also essential for plant and animal life, food cannot be produced without it.
Water can be destructive, flooding water may have tremendous force, waves hitting cliffs have a great deal of power and can cause rocks to crumble. Over a longer period, rain and rivers gently carve our landscape.
Water can be beneficial (apart from keeping is alive), providing leisure opportunities and transport routes. Rocks lying just beneath the surface can be dangerous hence that wonderful collection of lighthouses around our coasts.
How is water important to you? I have spent much of my life living near the sea, so that theme regularly draws me in for textile work ideas.
The sea takes its colour from the sky, reflections of the sun and other light, plants and other materials drifting in the water. What lies beneath the surface of the sea? I shall come to that later in the project.
