The Elements: Earth, Water, Fire and Air
What came into your mind when you saw these words?
Greek philosophers believed the universe to be comprised of these four elements. I shall be looking at these for the next four weeks starting with Earth.
You may want to think of chemical elements and that wonderful diagram, the Periodic Table.
Earth can be interpreted in many ways. Planet Earth, all children now learn about the structure of the earth from an early age, but what is it made of? Which chemical elements are prominent in which layer? As a Geographer I think of the structure of the Earth’s crust, rocks as old as 3000 million years to be found in Northwest Scotland and much more recent ones, less than 50 million years in Scotland’s Central Belt. These rocks have been formed and reformed in many ways and directions giving us the varied landscape Scotland enjoys today. Rocks reveal their organic origins by leaving fossil imprints. Minerals can colour vibrant streaks in the natural-coloured rock. Just what is beneath our feet?
You may think of earth as something found just below our feet, for growing plants of all types - maybe keep that idea till we look at gardens later in the year.
