Region 16 Block of the Month (or week) 2021

Crisp Autumn and Winter days pass into clear skies at night when the stars can be seen in their millions. If you watch long enough you may see a shooting star, is it really just space debris burning up on re-entering the atmosphere or is it the real thing? If you know where to look you may pick out the geostationary satellites which are so vital for our communication networks, sadly not romantic at all. We all now know that true stars are suns, sources of heat so great that they are seen from so far away. So why the ‘twinkle’? Light from the stars is bent as it passes through the Earth’s atmosphere so the star appears to shimmer or twinkle. Images of stars show many different numbers of points for this universal symbol.
