Patterns in the Landscape

Yellow boxes and White Lines

Road markings are a temporary feature of any landscape. On busy roads, the markings may only last three months before becoming worn away. Modern formulations of road paint without toxic ingredients last even less time. Do they constitute a pattern? In some places, yes. In other places the sheer quantity of the markings may detract from the surrounding townscape or landscape.

They inform, irritate, frustrate, empower – it all depends what sort of road user you are.

My choice of a dappled black/grey fabric for the background was an illustration of the variation in the actual road surface ‘enjoyed’ across the country. Close inspection of that uneven surface can reveal interesting textures which may lead to some artistic inspiration. (Don’t spend too long looking at road surfaces, beware the carbon monoxide by a busy road).
