Patterns in the Landscape

Grid Street Pattern

Manhattan, in the city of New York, epitomises the regular grid system of streets, so regular that there are no names, just numbers and directions for the streets.

Scotland has its own grid street patterns in Edinburgh and Glasgow, designed in the 18th century. The symmetry in Edinburgh includes a grand square at each end. The centre spine of that grid (George Street) will soon be pedestrianised to allow for appreciation of the architecture without buses and cars clogging up the street, along with more pavement cafes and ‘pop up’ opportunities.
