Patterns in the Landscape
Lowland British Countryside is intensively used. The valleys and gently rolling hills are divided into semi regular shapes by simple wire fences, low hedges, narrow belts of trees or the fantastic ecosystem – the mature hedgerow. Passing a hedgerow, a multitude of flora and sometimes fauna can be seen. These earthen banks topped by mature hedges not only provide wildlife with homes but help keep the soil from being washed or blown away.
The fields laid to crops show stripes created by the tractors, often relating to the shape of the land. Pasture will be a carpet of colour, mostly green, but changing throughout the year. Small areas of woodland provide shelter from wind. Rivers and streams meander through the landscape, creating more boundaries. Patchwork in a thousand shades of green and brown.
