Patterns in the Landscape

Beneath My Feet

I don’t think I would enjoy walking on streets paved with gold, probably slippery, and the glare from the sun would be too strong. But looking down at paved areas can reveal patterns. There is a regularity to some outdoor municipal paving and the floors of modern shopping centres that makes the child in me want to get out the chalk and play hopscotch. My children would entertain themselves on boring shopping trips by avoiding walking on the cracks between the slabs. The patterns that I enjoy the most are the ancient (or at least, old) random stone constructions found on the quaysides of old ports. The stones are usually irregular in size and shape, and often worn to reveal the structure of the stone. Patchwork in stone.
