Region 16 Block of the Month (or week) 2021

 Under the sea

Until the mid 20th Century the ocean floor was a mystery. We now know that the movement of Earth’s tectonic plates has created underwater mountain ranges. In 1963 volcanic activity on the Mid- Atlantic Ridge just south of Iceland became apparent. Plumes of smoke rising from the water contained ash which built up and a new island emerged from the ocean floor 130metres below. It is named Surtsey and is a pristine environment (not ever directly affected by human activity) allowing scientific study not available anywhere else on Earth. What other surprises lurk deep down on the ocean floor?
