Gardens. This is the time of year when many of us leave our workrooms and get out into a garden of some sort. Britain has a most extensive array of gardens, public, private, large, small, productive, decorative. Are we a nation of gardeners?

Formal Gardens

Nobility and wealthy landowners in past centuries aspired to having a formal garden, the more complex the more prestigious. The palaces at Versailles and Hampton Court boasted exceptional examples. Warmer European countries used systems of fountains and other water features for a cooling effect. Large numbers of these wonderful gardens have been preserved for us to enjoy today. In the late 19th Century, British municipal authorities established public parks with formal flower beds, water features and often a bandstand. These parks provided a place for the less well off, without their own gardens, to relax and enjoy fresh air away from their workplaces.
