Spring Tulips

Region 16 Block of the Month (or week) 2021

Spring Flowers – Tulips

This fascinating plant was used as currency in 17th Century Europe, rich merchants made and lost fortunes trading them in a phenomenon later named as Tulipmania. Tulips had long been cultivated in Turkey but were only introduced to Europe by Dutch traders at the end of the 16th Century. Their value increased with the rareness of the variety. Today they are one of the favourite Spring flowers, normally flowering later than crocuses and daffodils but still sought after because of the range of colours and petal shapes available. Plant breeders still work at producing a tulip so dark that it’s almost black. I love the traditional bold red tulip. What’s your favourite?
